Wilsonville, OR

A contemplative woman holding aligner and a model of teeth with braces at Senestraro Family Orthodontics in Wilsonville, OR.Are you one of those people who have crooked teeth? There are lots of people who have crooked teeth. Researchers think that our teeth have become more crowded over time because our mouths are smaller. Over 30% of adults have crooked teeth that need some form of straightening. If you’re one of those adults, you may have been thinking about getting those crooked teeth fixed. What type of adult orthodontics are right for you? Are aligners or braces better for you? If you are serious about getting your teeth fixed, Senestraro Family Orthodontics wants to talk to you about the differences between braces and aligners.

Why You Might Need Orthodontics

People need orthodontics for several reasons. Some people have problems with their bite, such as an overbite or an underbite, and they need to get braces or aligners. People want to get their bite fixed before their teeth are impacted and begin to cause them pain. They might also get braces or aligners because their teeth are crowded too closely together, or they are crooked. Aligners and braces can fix spaces in between teeth, or properly space teeth that overlap.

Braces vs. Invisalign: The Pros and Cons

Braces consist of brackets that we glue onto your teeth, usually in the front of your teeth. We then move wires in between the brackets. Over time, we tighten the wires so we can change the position of your teeth. We develop a different plan for each patient, and we tighten wires depending on the course of treatment. We also choose the thickness of the wire depending on your treatment plan. If you have braces, you will need to come and see us to get your wires tightened.

Braces are a great option for patients who have teeth that are seriously overcrowded. Braces are also good for people who have trouble remembering to put aligners in each day. However, if you have braces, you have to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing each day. If you don’t, your teeth may be discolored when the braces come off. Also, braces can cut or poke your gums and cheeks.

On the other hand, Invisalign clear aligners are for people who want to straighten their teeth without braces. Aligners can be used to correct minor problems with your teeth. They are made of clear plastic and need to be replaced every other month. Aligners take less time to work than traditional braces. You also can eat or drink whatever you want with aligners because they are removable, so you can eat, drink, brush and floss by taking the aligners out. However, if you can’t remember to use aligners, you are better off with braces.
