Traditional Braces

Teenage girls smiling with braces at Senestraro Family Orthodontics.Have you been told that you need braces? You aren’t the only one. At any given time in the United States, nearly 4 million people are wearing braces. There are many options for braces out there. You may have been told that you need traditional braces, rather than other options that are available. If you’ve been told you need traditional braces, you might be wondering why traditional braces are the right choice for you. Let Senestraro Family Orthodontics take a minute to tell you why we think traditional braces are best for some of our clients.

Why Do I Need Traditional Braces?

People usually need traditional braces because their bite needs correcting. While it might seem that everyone’s bite is the same, it isn’t. People can have problems with their bite. You can have an overbite (your top teeth come down too far over your lower teeth), an underbite (your top teeth don’t come down far enough over your lower teeth) or a crossbite (your upper and lower jaws don’t meet where they should). All of these bite issues can be corrected with traditional braces.

People are also good candidates for traditional braces when they have severely crooked or crowded teeth. If your teeth are severely crooked or crowded, the only solution is traditional braces.

What Contributes to a Bad Bite?

People can have teeth that are misaligned or crooked for several reasons. Incorrect bites can have several causes, as well. If you sucked your thumb or you used a pacifier when you were a baby, you may have tooth and bite problems. Some people have problems with their bites and teeth because of accident or injury. Accidents and injuries contribute to the loss of teeth, which means your entire jaw looks different. Believe it or not, bite problems can be inherited as well. You may have gotten your bite problems from your mom or dad.

How Do I Care For My Braces?

Once you get your braces, you need to take good care of them. In fact, the better you take care of your braces, the less time and money you will waste. That’s because if you don’t take care of your braces, your orthodontist will need to replace wires and brackets, which delays treatment. If you do take care of your braces and follow directions, your braces will come off more quickly.

You need to avoid certain foods when you wear braces. Don’t eat soft candies or other chewy foods. Avoid hard foods, such as popcorn, as well. Both soft and hard foods can damage braces and break brackets. You should continue to eat fruit, but you need to know that hard fruits, such as apples, must be cut up before you eat them.

Make sure that you are brushing and flossing twice a day every day. This is important if you have braces. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth, you may not like what your teeth look like when the braces come off. You might have discolored teeth. Also, make sure that you visit us regularly for your appointments. That way, your braces will be adjusted on time.
